Abortions Delayed in Sweden STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Waiting times for abortions are "too long" in Sweden, the National Board of Health and Welfare said. Even though abortion is classified as emergency treatment, the report said Swedish women still must wait unnecessary lengths of time before being able to have the procedure, The Local said. The study found that the waiting time for a medical abortion can last up to two weeks, while the wait for a surgical abortion can extend up to 19 days. In comparison, the wait for a first doctor's visit can last up to 10 days. The report suggested that women seeking abortions in Sweden should be allowed to return home to complete the medical procedures. Between July 2005 and June 2006, 34,000 abortions were performed in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, the newspaper said. |
